26 year old Joshua Diamante from Markham, Ontario cuts hair for a living. He’s also a big sports fan. This Filipino barber enjoys great success in Canada, counting some of the country’s most famous athletes as his regular clientele.
For Joshua Diamante, all it took was an encouraging word from one of his college professors to set him on his true path. He was taking criminology at Centennial College when a professor sat him down for a quick chat after noticing that he seemed a bit distracted. While going to Centennial, Diamante used to have friends over to cut their hair in his mum’s basement. He showed his professor some photos of his work, who encouraged him to take some time off to concentrate on working on his barber skills.
He hasn’t looked back since.
Joshua Diamante now owns Throne Barbershop, which can accomodate 10 customers at any given time. And not just any customers. Diamanté keeps a shelf near the entrance of his barbershop filled with souvenirs from his more famous clients.
Baseball bats signed by Toronto Blue Jays Russell Martin, Kevin Pillar and Troy Tulowitzki, as well as a ball autographed by Marcus Stroman greet customers when they come in for their haircut. A basketball signed by the entire 2016-2017 Toronto Raptors team sits alongside the baseball memorabilia.
Joshua Diamante and his business partner, Brian Lat, are the people responsible for keeping the Toronto Blue Jays looking sharp, but also provide haircuts for the Toronto Football Club and celebrities like Kardinal Offishal and French Montana.
He started Throne Barbershop at just 21 years old, turning the shop from a basement operation to the successful endeavour it is today. He cuts hair for everyone, from the average Joe who might have just walked in from the street to the biggest celebrities.
For Joshua Diamante, it’s all about relationship building. His regulars love how he takes his time when he cuts their hair. Never one to rush, Diamante really takes his time to make them feel comfortable and confident, resulting in a fantastic haircut. The Toronto Blue Jays would agree, they consider him a part of their family, inviting him to special occasions like weddings. Not as their barber, but as a member of their family.
VISITING THE PHILIPPINES
He’s also had the chance meet with Filipino boxer (and politician) Manny Pacquiao. During a visit to the Philippines, Joshua Diamante presented Pacquiao with Throne Barbershop merchandise during Comicon Asia, and was scheduled to cut his hair but had to cancel when his luggage (and all the tools of his trade) went missing. Bummer.
So if you’re in town and need a quick trim, try giving Joshua Diamante a call. He’ll hook you up, for sure!
