Jollibee Canada’s quest for global domination continues, this time opening its fourth location in the Great White North. After opening three locations (two in Manitoba and another in Ontario), the Filipino fast food giant is set to open its fourth location. So, there’s finally an answer to the question from everyone who lives in the 905 area code: “Where is there a Jollibee near me?” Jollibee Mississauga is now open!
WHAT IS JOLLIBEE?
Even if you’re not Filipino, chances are you’ve heard of Jollibee Canada. “Jollibee”, not “Jollybee”. Jollibee Canada first made headlines when it opened its first two locations in the province of Manitoba, but it caught the attention of mainstream Canadian media when it opened in the Scarborough neighbourhood of Toronto in the province of Ontario in April.
Ontario happens to be home to the largest Filipino Canadian community in Canada.
When Jollibee Scarborough opened on Easter Sunday, Filipinos went bananas. The first guy in line, Paul Magbujos, waited for an incredible seventeen hours to have first dibs on Chicken Joy and Jolly Spaghetti.
For an entire month, Filipino Canadians lined up in heated tents to have a taste of home. The average wait time was seven hours, forcing Jollibee Scarborough to hand out tickets and limiting orders so everyone could go home with a bucket of Chicken Joy or two.
WHERE IS MISSISSAUGA?
Mississauga is actually home to Canada’s largest international airport, Toronto Pearson. So, for most Filipinos coming to Canada for the first time, you’re not landing in Toronto. You’re actually landing in Mississauga.
Depending on the route you take, Jollibee Mississauga is about 41 kilometers from Jollibee Scarborough, taking Highway 401.
The Filipino supermarket chain, Seafood City will be the site of Canada’s fourth Jollibee. Seafood City isn’t just a seafood supermarket, it actually sells a lot of other Filipino food items (we go there mostly to pick up some junk food, but yes, they do have fresh seafood and produce as well).
While most people from Mississauga would find themselves asking “where is there a Filipino grocery store near me?”, they probably couldn’t do any better than Seafood City. It has pretty much everything you need from a Filipino grocery (albeit at a premium) and it’s going to have a Jollibee very soon.
WHY ARE CANADIANS SO EXCITED ABOUT JOLLIBEE, ANYWAY?
Filipino businesses have been in Canada since we first arrived in the 1950s. Also, Canada is super diverse and multicultural. You can pretty much get anything (and we do mean anything) you’d like to eat, especially the closer you are to the city centres.
So, what’s with all the hype surrounding the arrival of yet another foreign fastfood chain?
Canada’s a young country. Certainly it has been populated for thousands of years by the First Nations, Inuit and Metis, but it wasn’t until modern times that Canada took its rightful place on the world stage.
Canada just celebrated its 150th birthday on 2017. As a country, that’s pretty young. That’s why whenever there’s something new (actually, whenever there’s anything new) Canadians tend to get very excited about it.
That doesn’t explain why people lined up for several hours just to have some fried chicken and spaghetti, though. On the other hand, Canadians are the same folk who are very proud of their poutine. All in all, we thing Filipinos and Canadians are a great match.
WHAT’S ON THE JOLLIBEE MISSISSAUGA MENU?
If the Jollibee Scarborough menu is anything to go by, the Jollibee Mississauga menu will provide the Filipino-Canadian community with all the fan favourites including: Crispy Jolly Chicken, Jolly Spaghetti and Palabok Fiesta. If you’ve never had a Peach Mango Pie, now might be your chance to try it.
Alas, the entire Jollibee menu will not be available (yet). Those looking for specific items might be a wee bit disappointed. Available Jollibee meals will include different combinations of Crispy Jolly Chicken, Jolly Spaghetti and Palabok Fiesta.
Breakfast Joys such as Corned Beef, Beef Tapa, Breakfast Steak and Hot Dog, as well as Rice Meals such as Garlic Pepper Beef, Ultimate Burger and Garlic Bangus are sadly absent.
