immigration consultant

One of the most popular questions Filipinos ask about Canada is: “Should I hire an immigration consultant to help me immigrate to Canada?”

Here at, we are big advocates of learning to do things by yourself.

If you don’t have any existing complications, submitting an application to go to Canada should be relatively easy and straightforward.

As long as you meet the minimum requirements of whatever program you might be thinking of using to go to Canada, that is.

Almost everyone at has done it without the use of immigration consultants or lawyers. And while we eventually all made it to Canada, we’d by lying if we said it wasn’t at all stress-free.

Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada IRCC on their official website says that you do NOT need to hire an immigration consultant or lawyer to help you submit an application to go to Canada.

Don’t believe us? Here’s the link.

Do I need a representative to help me apply?

No. The Government of Canada treats everyone equally, whether they use a representative or not.

All the forms and information that you need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA), visa and/or to immigrate to Canada are available for free on this website. If you follow the instructions in the application guide, you can complete the application form and submit it on your own.

If you decide to use an immigration representative, be careful whom you ask for advice.

Our personal experiences with immigration consultant or lawyers have been extremely spotty at best. That’s not to say that they’re all bad, but there are a LOT of them out there who’s only purpose in life is to make as much money out of you as possible.

If you really need help, you should hire an immigration consultant or lawyer. If your application doesn’t have any obvious problems, then put the application together and submit it on your own.

PROS – Immigration consultants can help you by sitting down with you and explaining the application process a bit more thoroughly.

Let’s say, you’re not a big fan of reading the fine print. Chances are, you might find the application process extremely daunting.

The immigration consultant will sit down with you and answer any questions you might have in regards to the application process.

They can certainly help you make sure you don’t miss answering any questions, and clarify some questions that might be confusing to you.

Which is exactly what you should be doing on your own anyway.

If you find that you’ve always found trouble following instructions, having an immigration consultant can certainly help you avoid mistakes that would result in an application being denied.

What the immigration consultant CAN’T do is make a favourable decision on your application. No matter what answer you put in your application, only the visa officer will make the final determination.

CONS – What immigration consultants cannot do is guarantee that your application is approved.

Don’t forget, immigration consultants do NOT provide their services for free. Even if your application is denied, you still have to pay the immigration consultant for their services.

Immigration consultants are supposed to follow ethical and professional standards, but let’s face it: when it comes down to it, it’s a business. We’re sure that a large majority of them are decent people, but if you’re already in trouble, chances are you don’t have too much money to spend on an immigration consultant.

Ask if they are willing to provide their services for free, and watch them run in the other direction.

So, which path are you leaning towards? Are you going to hire an immigration consultant, or are you going to submit an application for Canada all by yourself? Let us know in the comments.
