Canada still on track to welcome over 1 million immigrants by 2020

More than half of new immigrants to Canada will be from the Economic class

In 2017, the Government of Canada released a multi-year strategy that was called ambitious. The strategy calls for 1 million new immigrants to Canada by the year 2020.

When the strategy was presented at the House of Commons, Ahmed Hussen, minister for Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) called it the most ambitious plan in recent memory.

According to Hussen, the figure will count for 1% of the Canadian population. The number of new immigrants will help offset Canada’s aging population.

By 2035, over five million Canadians are set to retire. The Government of Canada is looking to welcome new immigrants to Canada to replace retirees in the workforce.

The Government of Canada is welcoming new immigrants to Canada who will help strengthen the economy, and is actively taking steps to minimize the processing times for Permanent Residency applications and help Permanent Residents become Canadian citizens faster.

While the Government of Canada’s Advisory Council on Economic Growth called for increasing the number of new immigrants to 450,000 every year by the year 2021, IRCC eventually settled for a lower level to ensure that service levels are met.

New immigrants who come to Canada receive publicly-funded settlement services which help them become engaged and productive members of their communities.

The Government of Canada wants to make sure that not only are new immigrants not made to wait too long during the application process, but also want to make sure that they’re well taken care of when they get arrive.

In order to ensure that service levels are met, the Government of Canada is not only looking to improve the application process and provide settlement services to new immigrants, they’re also trying to prevent the influx of people who cross the border from the United States, only to claim refugee status.

The Government of Canada is also stepping up its efforts to remove foreign nationals without status in Canada.

Immigration lawyers and consultants, who charge prospective new immigrants to Canada for their services, are calling for increased numbers. Third party representatives assist foreign nationals with their applications for Canada, but cannot guarantee any outcomes.

Only the Government of Canada can decide who to grant entry into the country, whether it is to visit, study, work or immigrate.

While immigration is under the purview of the federal government, each province and territory is given authority to nominate foreign nationals for immigration according to their particular needs.

Provinces and territories do so under the Provincial Nominee Programs.

Changes to immigration levels are still subject to change, and will depend greatly on a number of factors including Canada’s declining birth rate, an ageing population and the number of Canadians entering retirement.

Will you be submitting an application to immigrate to Canada soon?
