What is Tim Hortons?

Tim Hortons is a restaurant food chain famous for its donuts and coffee, with 4,613 locations in 14 countries. It’s named after Canadian hockey great Tim Horton, who founded the company in 1964.

Tim Hortons actually started out as a hamburger chain, but eventually shifted to donuts and coffee. The first Tim Hortons location is in Hamilton, Ontario.

In 1992, Tim Hortons merged with Wendy’s in Prince Edward Island, with Wendy’s chairman Dave Thomas in attendance for the grand opening.

In 2002, Tim Hortons overtook McDonalds to become Canada’s largest food service operator.

Burger King bought Tim Hortons for US$11.4 billion in 2014, becoming a subsidiary of American company Restaurant Brands International, which operates such brands as Burger King and Popeyes.

Tim Hortons opened in the Philippines in 2017, with Ms. Universe Canada Siera Bearchell in attendance.

Tim Hortons Roll Up The Rim Contest

Every February, Tim Hortons holds it’s super-popular Roll Up The Rim contest, which features limited edition cups with random prizes hidden under the rim.

The only time the contest was held other than February was in July 2017, when Tim Hortons held a special Roll Up The Rim contest to mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation.

The whole thing started when Tim Hortons’ supplier for paper cups, Lily Cup suggested using their new cups which allowed for printing short messages under the rim. Tim Hortons first tried it out in 1986, with the biggest prize to be won being a box of Timbits.

Tim Hortons Roll Up The Rim Contest prizes for 2019

This year, there are 1 in 6 chances at winning something. We really don’t know what that means, but we’re sure of one thing: You’re not guaranteed a prize when you buy six cups of coffee.

This year, the prizes are as follows:

Millions of free coffee and donuts,
50,000 $50 Tim Hortons gift cards,
1,000 GT bicycles from Sportchek,
100 $5,000 prepaid cards from CIBC and
40 Jeep Compass 4x4s.

It’s kind of cold out there today, so please excuse us. We’re just going to drive over to Timmy’s and pick up some coffee and maybe a box of Timbits. Be right back!
