Filipino janitor in Canada wins $7 million, won’t quit his job just yet

A Filipino janitor in Surrey, British Columbia in Canada is a brand new millionaire, after winning the jackpot prize of Lotto 6/49.

Vito Halasan from the Philippines won $7 million (approximately PhP273,800,783.90) playing Lotto 6/49. He hit all six numbers to win the jackpot prize on April 27, 2019.

What is Lotto 6/49?

Lotto 6/49 is one of three lottery games played nationwide across Canada.

Started in 1982, Lotto 6/49 was the very first nationwide lottery that allowed Canadian to choose their own numbers.

Before Lotto 6/49, players could only use pre-printed numbers on tickets. The arrival of Lotto 6/49 saw the end of such pre-printed numbers.

Numbers for Lotto 6/49 are drawn by the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation every Wednesday and Saturday.

Numbers are chosen using the Smartplay Halogen II ball machine.

The largest ever jackpot in Canadian history was for Lotto 6/49, totalling $63.4 million (approximately PhP2,479,852,814.18). It was won by a ticket purchased in Mississauga, Ontario in 2013.

The probability of winning the Lotto 6/49 jackpot is 1 in 13,983,816.

Filipino janitor wins Lotto jackpot, will keep his job

Halasan said he has no plans on quitting his job as a janitor, and that he’s planning on taking care of his three kids and four grandchildren by buying a nice house.

Halasan moved from the Philippines to Canada in 2009. He’s been working as a janitor for several years.

He scanned his ticket and couldn’t believe his luck. The first person he called was his daughter, who checked his numbers online several times.

While he’s not planning to quit his job, he will be working a few less hours, ostensibly to figure out a way to enjoy his winnings responsibly.

Congratulations, kabayan!
