FAR FROM HOME
The 69 containers of garbage have finally arrived in Vancouver. The containers of garbage were at the centre of a diplomatic dispute between Canada and the Philippines.
WHAT WENT ON BEFORE
The containers of garbage was shipped by a Canadian businessman from Whitby, Ontario.
Originally labelled as recyclable materials, the containers were found to have been full of household waste instead.
The containers have been sitting in Philippine ports since 2013.
After unsuccessful attempts using diplomatic channels, the Government of Canada finally agreed to take back the containers after Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte threatened to go to war over the issue.
The dispute was finally resolved after the Government of Canada took back the containers at its own expense.
Unhappy with how slowly the Government of Canada was moving to remove the containers of garbage from the Philippines, Duterte ordered the recall of its senior diplomats from Canada.
The recalled diplomats have since returned to their posts.
The containers of trash left the Philippines on May 31, 2019. 69 containers with an estimated 1,500 tones of household waste was loaded onto the MV Bavaria before being transferred to the Anna Maersk.
The Anna Maersk arrived at the Deltaport terminal in Metro Vancouver on Saturday June 29 without further incident.
The contents of the containers will be disposed of in accordance with Canadian environmental regulations.
