International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a language proficiency exam for individuals who do not speak English as a first language. It is one of the major English-language proficiency exams in the world.

IELTS BACKGROUND

In 1980, the Cambridge English Language Assessment and the British Council launched the English Language Testing Service (ELTS).

The the International Development Program of Australian Universities and Colleges (IDP) joined the Cambridge English Language Assessment and the British Council and formed a new partnership which brought a new name for the test: International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

In 1989, IELTS was composed of four modules: two non-specialized modules, listening and speaking and two specialized modules, reading and writing.

In 1995, revisions were made to IELTS. Instead of a choice of three field-specific reading and writing modules, IELTS now had one academic reading module and one academic writing module. Thematic link between the reading and writing modules were removed to improve reading and writing ability assessment. General training reading and writing modules were alighned with Academic reading and writing modules.

In 2001, IELTS made further revisions to the speaking test.

In 2005, new assessment criteria were introduced to the IELTS writing test.
