The Seven Oaks School Division in Winnipeg, Manitoba is looking for additional students for the Filipino Bilingual Program at Arthur E. Wright School.
SCHOOL NEEDS MORE STUDENTS TO CONTINUE PROGRAM
The school division says that they need to register a minimum of 20 students for Kindergarten and first grade, and an additional 20 students in the second and third grades.
Members of the community are trying to drum up support for the program, which is the first of its kind in Canada.
If the school fails to reach the minimum number of registrations, the program will not continue the program.
MANITOBA HOME TO MORE THAN 80,000 FILIPINOS
The province of Manitoba is home to over 80,000 Filipinos. According to historical data, Filipinos first arrived in Canada in the province, when a group of healthcare professionals crossed the border from the United States.
The school division has a large Filipino community, with the program being offered at Arthur E. Wright School.
The Filipino Bilingual Program isn’t just for Filipinos. The Seven Oaks School Division encourages everyone who is interested in learning more about the history and culture of the Philippines to register for the program. Parents are not required to speak the language.
CLASSES TAUGHT IN ENGLISH AND TAGALOG
As part of the bilingual program, Social Studies, Health, Filipino Literacy and Daily Routines are all taught in Tagalog.
Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Music and Physical Education are taught in English.
The curriculum was developed to help students learn without the need of parents having a background in speaking the language.
The bilingual program is available for Kindergarten to Grade 4.
FREE SCHOOL BUSES FOR STUDENTS
Students who live in the Seven Oaks School Division who wish to register for the bilingual program will be provided with free bussing.
