Leylah Annie Fernandez fell to Marie Bouzkova of the Czech Republic, 6-0, 6-1 during her Rogers Cup debut. But the 16 year old Filipino tennis phenom isn’t letting the loss get her down. In fact, she’s already looking forward to what’s up next.
LEYLAH ANNIE FERNANDEZ JUNIOR FRENCH OPEN
Fernandez won her first junior French Open title last June, as well as her first pro singles and doubles championships at the Gatinuea National Bank Challenger last July.
Fernandez spoke with sportsnet.ca, sharing how her coach (and dad), Jorge Fernandez told her to stay calm.
Down 5-0, Fernandez said her dad told her that “it’s just a score. That we can always come back from it. And remember, 0-0, just keep working harder. And once you have your opportunity, just go and grab it.”
ALL SMILES DESPITE DISAPPOINTING ROGERS CUP DEBUT
Fernandez was still all smiles despite the defeat.
She was the first Canadian to win at Roland Garros, and the first to win a junior grand slam since Eugenie Bouchard did it at Wimbledon in 2012.
“It’s been bonuses just winning tournaments. We all know how hard it is, and I’m happy that I was able to get those titles,” Fernandez told Sportsnet.
LEYLAH ANNIE FERNANDEZ CURRENTLY RANKED 260
Fernandez is currently ranked 260 in the world, but is aiming to be in the top 200 by the end of the year.
We shall continue watching Leylah Annie Fernandez’s career with great interest!
