Filipino woman dies after being hit by a car while crossing the street in Canada

The Filipino community in Winnipeg, Manitoba is mourning after a Filipino woman passes away after being hit by a vehicle while crossing the street, just one day before her 24th birthday.




FILIPINO WOMAN JUST RECENTLY ARRIVED IN CANADA

The accident happened at around 2:00pm CST on August 1 at the intersection of Sargent Avenue and Simcoe Street in Winnipeg’s West End.

Lammatao had just arrived in Canada in 2017, and had been working at Tim Horton’s and Max’s Restaurant at the time of the accident.

Jillian Lammatao was crossing the street using the pedestrian crosswalk when she was hit by a car being driven by an 89 year old driver.

Lammatao had just stepped off the sidewalk when she was hit by a dark coloured Mercedes Benz which failed to stop at the intersection.

Video captured by surveillance was shared by local property owner Horacio Tavares with CityNews.

Lammatao was taken to the hospital by paramedics, where she succumbed to her injuries a few days later.

During the vigil held for Lammatao, friends described the woman as “sweet” and “thoughtful”.

The Filipino community organized the vigil at the intersection where the accident occurred, with the family laying flowers at the corner where Lammatao took her final steps.




FILIPINO WOMAN PART OF RISING NUMBER OF PEDESTRIAN FATALITIES IN WINNIPEG

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, there have been eight pedestrian fatalities involving motor vehicle collisions so far this year.

In a statement, police said that they’ve seen “a number of serious or fatal motor vehicle collisions this year that involve pedestrians, cyclists and motorists – including motorcycles. All users of our roadways share a responsibility to keep each other safe.”

The driver was arrested at the scene and may face numerous charges pending the results of the investigation. The Winnipeg Police Service is appealing for any witnesses to come forward.
