Jollibee Thornhill: Biggest Jollibee in Canada set to open before Christmas

Via @FilipinosInCanada

Jollibee Edmonton just opened to massive crowds over the weekend, the fifth location for the Filipino fast-food giant. Now, construction for the sixth (and largest) location is well on its way: Jollibee Thornhill is set to open its doors to the public before Christmas.

Jollibee Foods Corporation is a Filipino fast food chain with over 1,200 locations worldwide.

Jollibee currently has five locations in Canada: two in Winnipeg, Manitoba, one in Scarborough, Ontario, one in Mississauga, Ontario and one in Edmonton, Alberta.

Jollibee was started by Tony Tan Caktiong in 1975 as a simple ice cream parlour in Quezon City in the Philippines.

Although customers came in for ice cream, they started making requests for hot meals and sandwiches. Pretty soon, sales of hot meals and sandwiches soon overtook their original lineup of ice cream.

Caktiong decided to abandon the whole ice cream parlour idea and make the store into a fast food restaurant.

And that’s how Jollibee first got started.

Three years after they got started, there were seven Jollibee stores spread across Metro Manila, including the first franchised store in Santa Cruz.

Despite the arrival of US fast food giant McDonalds in 1981, Jollibee managed to continue its rapid growth. Today there are almost 1,000 Jollibee stores in the Philippines.

Jollibee aggressively expanded overseas, opening its first international store in Taiwan in 1986. It opened its first North American store in Daly City, California in 1998.

The first Canadian location was in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2016, drawing large crowds who waited for hours in the bitter winter cold.

Today, there are five Jollibee locations in Canada, with 95 more planned openings by 2023.

Jollibee is famous because of the food they sell. Jollibee’s menu is best described as Filipino version of American fast-food. Including hamburgers, spaghetti and fried chicken.

The Yumburger is a basic hamburger with special Jollibee sauce, which might best be described as a combination of ketchup and mayonnaise. The Yumburger is also available in different variations, including with a slice of pineapple, a strip of bacon, lettuce and cheese (the Amazing Aloha).

Filipino spaghetti is the pretty unique. It’s super red and it’s got hotdog slices. Filipinos usually have this kind of spaghetti during birthday parties, because it’s fun for both kids and adults alike. Jollibee makes it super convenient for you, if you want to replicate the whole Filipino birthday party experience. Just don’t wear white whilst eating Jollibee Spaghetti (you’ll thank us later).

Let’s talk about Jollibee’s chicken. In the Philippines, it’s called ChickenJoy. In Canada, it’s not called ChickenJoy, it’s called Jolly Crispy Chicken. Something to do with the North American copyright holder Chick-N-Joy (established in 1968).

Whatever you call it, it’s definitely “crispylicous” (crispy on the outside)and “juicylicous” (juicy on the inside) at the same time. Just tell them you want ChickenJoy, they’ll know what you mean.

Just a few minutes north of Downtown Toronto, the suburban community of Thornhill has a population of 56,361.

Because of its proximity to the City of Toronto, the population of Thornhill has grown dramatically. Thornhill is now home to a large number of Filipinos, many of whom came to Canada under the now-defunct Live In Caregiver Program.

Thornhill is home to Canadians from diverse backgrounds, including Jewish, Chinese, Korean, Persian and Italian.

To put things in perspective, there are 33,000 members of the Jewish community, while there are approximately 2,535 Filipinos living in the Thornhill area.

Mississauga-based construction company BUILD IT By Design (who also constructed the Jollibee location at Seafood City in Mississauga) confirmed to BlogTO that the Promenade Mall location will be over 3,300 sq ft.

Construction has already begun, and is estimated to be completed in three months.

BlogTO is predicting a late November or early December opening. They were right, looks like Christmas is coming early for the Filipinos in the area.
