Canada’s Most Dangerous Places

Macleans just released their list of Canada’s Most Dangerous Places, and guess what? Four cities are in the province of Manitoba.

MACLEANS RELEASES LIST OF CANADA’S MOST DANGEROUS PLACES

Among the top 20 Canadian cities ranked according to severity of violent crime, Thompson, MB has the dubious honour of being #1.

Portage la Prairie is #3, while Selkirk is #7. Manitoba’s capital, Winnipeg is #13.

According to the ranking, all four Manitoban cities experienced an increase in crime severity from the year before.

STATISTICS CANADA’S CRIME SEVERITY INDEX

Macleans used Statistics Canada’s Crime Severity Index, which was actually released last July.

Thompson’s mayor Colleen Smook isn’t taking the news of her city ranking #1 on the list lightly.

Smook said during an interview with 680 CJOB, “We’ve had many issues, especially with youth and break and enters, and actually during the summer it escalated to some machete attacks.”

Smook attributes it to gang activity, involving some kids as young as 10 years old.

In response, the provincial government of Manitoba announced that it is spending over CAD2.1 million in a youth outreach program called Street Reach to help disadvantaged kids.

Smook says that Street Reach is effective for her city, bringing down youth crime by up to 85%.

MANITOBA HAS HIGHEST HOMICIDE RATES IN CANADA

Manitoba has the highest homicide rates among provinces in Canada.

Manitoba was #1 on the provincial crime index, up 5.7% from the year previous.
