Canada came in third in Anholt-Ipsos’s Nations Brand Index (NBI), a list that ranks 50 countries from around the world using several different criteria, including exports, governance, culture and heritage, people, tourism, investment and immigration.




20,000 GLOBAL CITIZENS PARTICIPATE IN NATIONS BRAND INDEX

More than 20,000 people from around the world participated. 

Global citizens answered questions about a country’s system of governance, sports programs and quality of life were included.

Only two countries beat out Canada for the top spots: Germany and France.

Canada beat out the United Kingdom and Japan.




CANADA RANKS #3 IN NATIONS BRAND INDEX

The study showed that Canada was the only nation in the top 5 to improve on exports, governance, culture and heritage, people, tourism, investment and immigration.

Canada was ranked #5 in the index in 2018.




GLOBAL CITIZENS FIND CANADA TO BE “FRIENDLY AND HAPPY”

New to the study this year were questions about a country’s “personality traits”.

39% of global citizens thought that Canada is “friendly”, while 29% thought that Canada was “happy”.

30% thought that Canada is “trustworthy” while 19% thought that Canada is “generous”.

Ipsos is a leader in the global research industry industry.

Operating in 87 countries around the world, Ipsos has more than 16,000 researchers.

Ipsos specializes in media and advertising research, client and employee relationship management, opinion and social research as well as data collection and delivery.

Simon Anholt works with Ipsos to deliver the NBI, which helps countries assess and develop their brand strategies, providing them with the insight necessary to move a country’s reputation forward by increasing the success of its business, trade and tourism efforts.

The NBI is the world’s only comprehensive survey focused on a country’s national brand.

The NBI helps governments to better understand, measure and establish their national image and reputation on the global stage.

The NBI measures a country’s brand image using six metrics, including: exports, governance, culture and heritage, people, tourism and immigration and investment.




NBI RANKS 50 COUNTRIES

The NBI ranked 50 countries around the world.

In North America and Western Europe, the following countries were included: the United States of America, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Ireland, Scotland, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Switzerland, Finland, Austria, Greece, Belgium, Northern Ireland, Norway and Croatia.

In Central and Eastern Europe, the following countries were included: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine.

In the Asia-Pacific Region, Japan, South Korea, China, India, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia and New Zealand.

 Latin American and Caribbean countries include: Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Peru, Columbia and Jamaica.

Middle Eastern and African countries such as the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Qatar were also included.

The Philippines was not part of the study.
