Biometrics rules

Canada collects biometric information when during the application process. Starting December 3, 2019, if you will be applying to renew or extend your Visitor Visa, Study Permit or Work Permit, you will need to provide your biometrics as part of the application process. If you are applying from inside Canada, you can now submit fingerprints and photographs at Service Canada thanks to changes to the biometrics rules.

CANADA CHANGING BIOMETRICS RULES FOR INLAND APPLICATIONS

The collection of biometrics has been in place since December 31, 2018 for most people applying from outside of Canada.

Service Canada is authorized to collect biometric information on behalf of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

If you are applying to renew or extend your Visitor Visa, Study Permit or Work Permit from inside Canada, you can provide your biometric information at any of the 58 designated Service Canada locations.

WHERE TO SUBMIT BIOMETRICS IN CANADA

Effective December 3, 2019, you can now submit your biometrics at any of the 58 designated Service Canada locations.

You will have to provide fingerprints and photographs if you are applying inside Canada for permanent residency.

You will also need to submit fingerprints and photographs if you are applying to renew or extend your Visitor Visa, Study Permit or Work Permit from inside Canada.

You will no longer have to leave Canada just to submit your biometrics. The new rules will save you time and money because you won’t have to leave Canada to complete your application.

Take note that not every Service Canada location can collect biometrics on behalf of IRCC. Check the link below to find the closest one to your location:

HOW MUCH IS THE BIOMETRICS FEE?

After receiving the biometrics instruction letter, you have to pay the biometrics fee of CAD 85.00 when you submit your application online or by post.

You have 30 days from the date indicated in the biometrics instruction letter to submit your biometrics.

You cannot pay the biometrics fee at Service Canada locations.
