The Toronto Star is reporting that the province of Nova Scotia in Canada approved a record breaking number of immigrants in 2019. According to the Nova Scotia Office of Immigration, 2,780 applications were approved for the year.
This comes after efforts by the province to hire qualified foreign workers in specific sectors.
The number of approved application were up 21% from the previous year, and well over 300% from 2013.
The provincial minister for immigration Lena Metlege Diab said that Nova Scotia’s population is growing.
Not only is the population growing, Diab said, but is also getting younger as the province prioritized applications from qualified foreign workers who can fill labour shortages in priority industries such as healthcare.
The provincial minister for health Randy Delorey is encouraged by the record breaking results of the province’s efforts at recruiting qualified foreign workers for the healthcare industry.
According to the 2011 census, there were approximately 825,050 people in Nova Scotia, 1,890 of whom are Filipino.
