Members of the Filipino community in the city of Saskatoon in the province of Saskatchewan in Canada spoke with CTV News to express their concern for their friends and family living near Taal Volcano, which is currently in the middle of an eruption.
FILIPINO COMMUNITY CONCERNED FOR RELATIVES IN THE PHILIPPINES
“I feel sorry for them. They are really unprepared for what’s happening,” Luzviminda Noquia told CTV News. “They are locked in the house because they can’t go outside to buy the food because it’s still throwing the small rocks – it’s a danger for their head. Also, it’s hard to see and the road is really slippery for them because it rained and the ash is like clay, so they’re staying in the house.”
VOLCANO SHUTS DOWN AIRPORT, OFFICES AND SCHOOLS
Taal Volcano erupted last Sunday, January 12, sending a column of ash and other volcanic debris 15 kilometres into the atmosphere.
The eruption forced the country’s main airport (which is 65 kms away from the volcano), the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) to shut down.
Government offices and schools were also closed.
VOLCANO FORCES THOUSANDS TO EVACUATE
Philippine officials evacuated more than 30,000 people from the immediate area of the volcano. Most are currently staying at evacuation centres.
Emergency supplies such as masks were quickly sold out as ash fall blanketed every surface as far as Manila.
ALERT LEVEL RAISED TO 4; MAJOR ERUPTION IMMINENT
While there are no reports of casualties, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHILVOCS) has raised the alert level to 4, warning that an eruption is imminent.
More than 200 people were killed in 1965 when Taal Volcano last erupted.
