world press freedom index

The World Press Freedom Index is a report from Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and is based on a questionnaire about different topics, including pluralism, media independence, environment and self censorship, legislative framework, transparency and infrastructure.

INDEX BASED ON QUESTIONS ABOUT MEDIA INDEPENDENCE AND INCIDENTS OF VIOLENCE AGAINST MEMBERS OF THE PRESS

The questionnaire also asks questions about how media is regulated, penalties for press offences as well as the level of independence public media enjoys.

Points are also assigned for incidents of violence against journalists that are attributed to governments and other groups.

The smaller the score a country has, the greater the freedom of press.

The questionnaire is sent by Reporters without Borders to its 18 partner organizations across 5 continents.

Over 150 correspondents, including journalists, researchers, jurists and human rights activists participated in the creation of the index.

ONLY COUNTRIES WITH VERIFIABLE INFORMATION INCLUDED IN WORLD PRESS FREEDOM INDEX

The index gives an indication on the state of press freedom in each country.

Only countries which verifiable information could be gathered was included.

Questions change from year to year, to follow a country’s progress, the creators of the index suggests using its rank instead of its score.
