English tests for international students

Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) are authorized by the Government of Canada to accept International Students from different countries, including from the Philippines. International Students must meet the minimum requirements for language proficiency. The following are the English tests for International Students accepted by Canadian schools and universities.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many International Students have found it challenging to take these tests. The administrators of these tests have been working at finding ways to accommodate International Students so that they can submit their applications, with some making English tests available online.

These are the English tests for International Students accepted by Canadian schools and universities:

CANADIAN ACADEMIC ENGLISH LANGUAGE (CAEL)

CAEL is accepted by most English-speaking colleges and all English-speaking universities in Canada.

CAEL is operated by Paragon Testing Enterprises and is available in the Philippines.

CAEL results are usually available within 8 business days.

CAMBRIDGE ASSESSMENT TEST

The results of the Cambridge Assessment Test are accepted by over 200 DLIs.

The Cambridge Assessment is administered by Cambridge Assessment Admissions Testing.

Results for the computer-based Cambridge Assessment Test are usually available in 2 to 3 weeks, while results for the paper-based Cambridge Assessment Test are usually available in 4 to 6 weeks.

DUOLINGO ENGLISH TEST

Results for the Duolingo English Test is accepted by 140 DLIs in Canada.

Test results are usually available in two business days.

INTERNATIONAL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TESTING SYSTEM (IELTS) ACADEMIC

The IELTS academic test is accepted by more than 400 DLIs in Canada.

In the Philippines, it is administered by the British Council.

Test results are usually available in 13 days for paper-based tests, and 5 to 7 days for computer-based tests.

International Students from the Philippines who are applying under the Student Direct Stream (SDS) can apply for their Study Permit in 20 days, provided they get a score of at least 6.0 on each test (speaking, listening, reading and writing).

An online test called IELTS Indicator is currently available.

Only test results from IELTS General Training and IELTS Academic are accepted for SDS applications.

PEARSON TEST OF ENGLISH (PTE)

The Pearson Test of English (PTE) is accepted by a majority of DLIs.

Test results are usually available in 2 business days, but results for the online Versant English Test are available immediately.

TEST OF ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE (TOEFL)

Results for TOEFL are accepted by more than 400 DLI, including every university in Canada.

Test results are usually available within 6 business days.

The online TOEFL iBT Special Home Edition is currently available. Results for the online test are usually available within 6 to 10 business days.
