According to a statement released on Sunday by the Philippine Government‘s Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) , more than 600,000 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) displaced by the COVID-19 pandemic will require assistance.
According to data gathered by DOLE’s Philippine Overseas Labor Offices (POLOs) around the world, 604,403 OFWs have applied for the Abot Kamay Ang Pagtulong (AKAP) Program.
The AKAP Program provides a one-time payment of USD$200.00 (PhP10,000.00) for eligible OFWs.
The Philippine Government has so far provided PhP2.5 billion in funding to DOLE for the AKAP Program, which has been distributed to 237,778 OFWs.
Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has approved an additional PhP 5 billion in funding to repatriate OFWs displaced by the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as to provide additional aid.
Funds will be allocated to different government agencies, including the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), which oversees the repatriation of OFWs.
